Rey tapped the brakes, slowing. “Do you want me to take a look at it?”

“No. If you can just drop me off somewhere on Sunset.”

“I can do better than that—”

“I don’t need you to do better than that. Just drop me off at the first pay phone.”

“Why don’t you just use your cell phone?”

“Oh my God. You know, I never even thought of that! Because I can’t get a signal.”

After a distinct pause, Rey said, “I don’t ever remember you being such a surly bastard.”

Cris made a face that Rey probably couldn’t read in the dark.

They continued on down the hill, and Cris’s misery escalated with each yard. Why did it have to be like this between them? Why couldn’t Rey have been everything he’d seemed at the start?

More importantly, why couldn’t Cris stop feeling this way? It was over. His mind was made up. Why did he still have to feel—

“Jesus fucking Christ.”

Cris wrenched his gaze forward in time to see one of the giant oaks by the side of the road come crashing down ahead of them. Leaves and dirt drifted in the wind, white on black, the image as stark as a film negative.

Rey hit the brakes, but it was too late. Cris felt the impact as one of the front tires hit something—a rock?

A branch?—and exploded.

Belatedly, he remembered he hadn’t put his seat belt on, realized that he was probably—ironically—going to die with Rey, and then the Mustang was careening across the narrow highway. Numbly, he watched a wall of tree trunks loom up on his right. He tried to brace for impact.

Rey twisted the wheel, hand slapping over hand, tires and brakes screeching. The Mustang spun out, made almost a full circle, and skated to a lurching stop.

Slowly, in shaking disbelief, Cris let go of the dashboard and sank back in the bucket seat. His blood beat a dizzy tempo in his temples, his heart hammered in his throat. All that adrenaline and no place to go. He felt almost sick in the wake of that violent surge.

He had been so sure. The wind…the car out of control…exactly like before…like his mother….

Rey was speaking to him, voice urgent. “Cris? Are you okay?”

Cris turned his head and stared at him.

“Are you okay?”

Cris nodded. He turned back to stare at the fallen tree. Leaves and twigs still floated lazily on the breeze.

Rey jumped out and walked to within a few feet of the tree. Cris shoved open his door and followed.

Side by side, they stared at the fallen giant, the huge snarled roots dropping great clods of earth. The fender of the Mustang just reached the leaves and outstretched twigs.

A few seconds earlier and they would’ve been under that monster. It seemed unreal, impossible that they weren’t—nearly as unreal and impossible that the tree should have come down at all—yet here was the evidence a mere inches from their windshield.

“Talk about a freak accident,” Rey said, his voice sounding bizarrely calm. “That oak must be a couple of hundred years old and it picked nowto come down?”

“It’s the wind.
