Chapter 5
I run through the streets, picking up a familiar scent as I get closer to my destination. Two recognizable scents actually, but one I know better than the other. I soon reach the street for the daycare that Beccaâs mother owns.
I still havenât heard from Fenrir. He should have popped to my location some time ago. I canât help feeling that I should have checked on Becca myself sooner. I have been a little busy though.
As I approach, I see a side door open and someone steps out into the fenced back yard. I can only see the top of the personâs blond head. I also hear little voices squealing with delight.
âCome here, puppy!â one kid shouts. âOutside.â
âOh, heâs just so cute. I want to keep him,â a girl says.
I suddenly know exactly what happened to Fenrir.
âIâm sure he has a home,â I hear Becca tell them. âHis owner is probably missing him very much.â
I find myself hesitating in my steps. For as much as I wanted to see Becca, I also remembered our last encounter all too well; sheâd been possessed by Anubis. After having been touched by an underworld god, would she be the same?
But every Valkyrie seemed tainted to me now. Odin had said that Gelsh, in her Midgard form, could still be in danger of the Valkyriesâ wrath; they werenât very happy to be on the losing side. I wasnât certain that I wanted to stir up that nest either.
Becca would never become Gelsh again or allowed to return to the Valkyrie. Not since Hjalda had taken Gelshâs wings as she came down here to warn me of the plot being cooked up against me. Now that Becca belonged fully to Midgard, much like yours truly, it fell to me to protect her.
If the undead jackal had left his taint on her, I probably needed to take care of that as well.
It is high time to face Becca.
I cross over to the fence and step up onto a hastily formed rock of ice so that I can see over. âThatâs where youâve been hiding,â I call out.
Becca gasps as she turns to see me. âIs this your puppy?â she asks.
I can tell that she remembers me, not that it would be easy to forget after what weâd been through, and I am pleased. âYes, heâs mine.â
She looks like she doesnât believe me. âWhat are you doing around here?â
Now I see why sheâs so skeptical: she thinks Iâm stalking her. Again, good reason, but very wrong. âI was out walking Fenrir and he got away from me.â I shrug, trying to keep it casual.
âAre you standing on a ladder?â She approaches the fence as if sheâs going to look over it.
âNo, no ladder here.â I really donât want her to see the ice either.
âThen what are you standing on,â she presses.
âNothing.â
Snake venom pours into my mouth. I bend over, hiding myself behind the fence and spit it out as quietly as I can. Itâs not often that I get the opportunity to not have to choke it down.
