Chapter 6

The sun is now blazing over the horizon. As I look out across the terrain from my viewpoint on top of the cave we rested in, I can’t help but feel a sense of dread creep into my chest. Appollo’s territory appears to be even harsher than where we’ve just came from. The path ahead is littered with the unknown. Will Appollo and his males be worse than Barrock? There could be all kinds of treacherous shit awaiting us. All I know is I’ll do everything in my power to deliver Eve safely back to her friends.

I make my way back down to the bike where I left Eve. My hearts are heavy. Last night, as well as being physically intimate, we kissed. In my culture, that means we are mated. I should have told her kissing was an important bonding process for Jaszovas. It was unfair of me not to. But knowing she truly belongs to me now and not the Vysarian who is her betrothed mate is all I could do to claim her as my own.

She’s been very subdued since she awoke. It kills me inside to think she’s regretting last night. But what can I do? Until she tells me she no longer wants the Vysarian male who the Vysarian government matched her to as her mate, I must stand back and not let my feelings for her consume me. I must stick with my mission to get her safely back to Ava and the others.

Our eyes lock as I walk towards her and I want nothing more than to pull her into my arms and proclaim my eternal love for her. But I must restrain my feelings. I must stay focused. There is still a perilous journey ahead of us.

I climb astride my bike and offer Eve my hand to help her climb up. She’s hesitant in taking it and it feels as though my hearts have been constrained.

When her hands slide loosely around my waist, I grab hold of her wrists and push them firmer around me, showing her she must hold on tighter. Yesterday you couldn’t have slid a leaf between us. Today, you could get a whole branch between our bodies. “Keep close, Eve. We are about to enter a place where the vegetation is known to be lethal when touched.” She grabs hold of me tighter and I suddenly feel whole again.

As quickly as I can, I cautiously make our way past the remaining landscape of boulders into a forest full of strange and twisted vegetation. “These plants are known to be lethal if touched."

Eve and I journey deeper into the forest. Each metre we cover is a gamble with the toxic flora that surrounds us. The air is thick with the scent of danger, like a twisted perfume designed to lure you in until it’s too late.

I tap her leg to get her attention. “When we enter the forest, watch out for the purple thorn bushes.” My twitchers quiver with concern.
