He came out of Potterâs office, got into the BMW. He was quite excited now that he had the name of the murderer. He looked at the dashboard clock. It was 5.15. So he drove straight home.
He put the car in the garage, and went down the path to the back door. He let himself in with his key, closed the door and looked round the kitchen. There was no sign of Mary and no sign of tea. He was about to call out when he heard her rushing from the hall to the kitchen with a magazine in her hand. She had a big smile on her face.
âHello, darling,â she said. âI thought I heard the door. What are you doing here?â
He frowned. âI live here,â he said.
âNo, no,â she said with a laugh and gave him a quick peck on the cheek. âI mean youâre so early. Youâre never as early as this.â
âI am sometimes. I finish at five,â he said.
âI know. I know. Well, Iâm sorry. Tea isnât ready. I didnât expect you for another half hour or so.â
âThatâs all right, sweetheart,â he said. âThereâs no rush.â
âBut youâve come just in time,â she said and she thrust the magazine she was holding into his hand and said, âWhatâs the answer to question nine? Itâs for a winter cruise round the Norwegian fjords. Youâll know it. You have that sort of memory.â
He wrinkled his nose and held up the magazine. âYou always said you didnât want to go anywhere cold for a holiday. And thereâs nowhere colder than the Norwegian fjords in winter.â
âNever mind all that, Michael. Itâs free!â
âFree? So what? I wouldnât go on a holiday I didnât want to go on simply because it was free.â
âThere are other prizes,â she said, then she snatched back the magazine, glanced at the question and said, ââWhat is the name of the Greek goddess of love and beauty?â Do you know it?â
He smiled. âOf course I know it. The Greek goddess of love and beauty is Mary,â he said boldly and with a deadpan expression. âNow, how about something to eat?â
Mary looked at him and frowned. Her mouth opened slightly. She licked her pretty lips. âI know that Venus is the Roman goddess of love and beauty ⦠and I was pretty certain that the Greek was Aphrodite.â
âItâs Mary, definitely,â he said. He turned away to avoid her eyes. âNow, whatâs for tea?â
âI just want to finish this,â she said, still frowning and trying to catch his eye. âAre you sure itâs Mary?â
âIf youâve put Aphrodite, your name wonât even be in the hat. Youâll ruin any chance of going up to the North Pole.â
Her eyes flashed. âIt isnât the North Pole, itâs the Norwegian fjords.â
âWell, Mary, I ask you. Do you really want to go to the Norwegian fjords in the middle of winter?â
She hesitated. âIf itâs free, I suppose ⦠well, I wouldnât mind. They say itâs breathtaking.â
âI think youâve misread it.â
She looked at him indignantly. âI have not misread it.
