Sean came through from the bathroom, his beard in wild disorder and a bath-towel round his waist.
The famous Duke of York
He had ten thousand men
He marched them up to the top of the hill
And he marched them down again.â
He sang as he poured bay rum from a cut-glass bottle into his cupped hands and rubbed it into his hair. Duff sat in one of the gilt chairs watching him. Sean combed his hair carefully then smiled at himself in the mirror. âYou magnificent creature,â Sean told his reflection.
âYouâre getting fat,â Duff grunted.
Sean looked hurt. âItâs muscle.â
âYouâve got a backside on you like a hippopotamus.â Sean removed his towel and turned his back to the mirror; he surveyed it over his shoulder.
âI need a heavy hammer to drive a long nail,â he protested.
âOh, no,â groaned Duff. âYour wit at this time of the morning is like pork for breakfast, heavy on the stomach.â
Sean took a silk shirt out of his drawer, held it like a toreadorâs cape, made two passes and swirled it onto his back with a half veronica.
âOlé!â applauded Duff wryly. Sean pulled on his trousers and sat to fit his boots.
âYouâre in a nice mood this morning,â he told Duff.
âIâve just come through an emotional hurricane!â
âWhatâs the trouble?â
âCandy wants a church wedding.â
âIs that bad?â
âWell, itâs not good.â
âWhy?â
âIs your memory so short?â
âOh, you mean your other wife.â
âThatâs right, my other wife.â
âHave you told Candy about her?â
âGood God, no.â Duff looked horrified.
âYes, I see your problem â what about Candyâs husband? Doesnât that even the score between you?â
âNo, he has gone to his reward.â
âWell, thatâs convenient. Does anyone else know youâre married already?â Duff shook his head.
âWhat about Francois?â
âNo, I never told him.â
âWell, whatâs your problem â take her down to the church and marry her.â
Duff looked uncomfortable.
âI donât mind marrying a second time in a magistrateâs court, it would only be a couple of old Dutchmen Iâd be cheating, but to go into a churchââ Duff shook his head.
âIâd be the only one whoâd know,â said Sean.
âYou and the headman.â
âDuff,â Sean beamed at him. âDuff, my boy, you have scruples â this is amazing!â
Duff squirmed a little in his chair.
âLet me think.â Sean held his forehead dramatically. âYes, yes, itâs coming to me â thatâs it.â
âCome on, tell me.â Duff sat on the edge of his chair.
âGo to Candy and tell her itâs all fixed, not only are you prepared to marry her in a church but youâre even going to build your own church.â
âThatâs wonderful,âDuff murmured sarcastically, âthatâs the way out of my difficulties all right.â
âLet me finish.â Sean started filling his silver cigar case. âYou also tell her that you want a civil ceremony as well â I believe thatâs what royalty do. Tell her that, it should win her over.â
âI still donât follow you.â
âThen you build your own chapel up at Xanadu â we can find a distinguished-looking character, dress him up in a dog collar and teach him the right words. That keeps Candy happy. Immediately after the service the priest takes the coach for Capetown.
