Chapter Eight

“You sayeth dwarf that my un-hatched layeth in danger in this rocky lair?” She hissed in an altogether different and more pleasant tone than she’d used before.

Dingo’s heart sounded like kettle drums pounding in his ears and his head was spinning and throbbing, but somehow he managed to respond to her, “Much danger!” he mumbled. He leaned forward and closed his eyes and rested his head against the spiny plate that protruded in front of him.

“Much I have tried to be free of this pain you have vanquished.” She hissed softly and rolled her neck gently a few times. “To leave this rocky lair kind dwarf, is not acceptable, though I agree that it is dangerous to the un-hatched.”

“But the shaft is falling apart,” Dingo argued. “You must leave or your egg, or your un-hatched, as you say, might be destroyed by a falling rock, or lost down into the shaft like my king. Just because you were hatched here doesn’t mean your egg must be hatched here!” Dingo said the last as if he was pleading for his very own life.

“Understanding is lacking for you,” she hissed quickly as if rushing to get the words out. Dingo felt her body lurch and then shudder repeatedly. Her hissy voice became weak with somewhat broken speak, “This dragon m…m…m…might nest her un-hatched somew…w…where other than this b…b…b…breaking apart rocky la…la…lair.”

Dingo was suddenly alarmed. The dragon had begun trembling now and her speech slurred and slowed and barely made sense to him. “Then go, go to another lair that’s safe for you and your un-hatched.” He pleaded.

“Understanding is lacking for you.” She groaned, and then she pulled in a massively slow, deep breath and through clenched fangs screamed, “More un-hatched!” Long slow dangling strands of foamy saliva swung from her maw and her eyes rolled up into their sockets.

“This dragon.” She sprayed each word. “Not leaving this lair!”

Dingo finally understood now. She was still laying eggs and she couldn’t leave the central vent shaft while the eggs were coming.

She shook, grunted, hissed, and growled for a long time, but the way she suddenly arched her back let Dingo know that it was time to lay the second egg, or maybe it was the third, he didn’t know. What he did know was that the sound was full of regret, and this poor laboring dragon was about to cry out in pain. It was terrifying, for any sound could bring down tons of huge stones and millions of pieces of rock.

“Quickly mighty dragon,” Dingo said sliding off of her neck as she lowered her trembling head toward the ledge. His feet were churning before they even hit the rock and he charged around her body until he was behind her where her long deadly tail curved away.

She heaved once, twice, then violently a third time. She could hold her tongue no longer. Her pain filled roar blasted through the central vent shaft like an entire city had fallen down. Concussive echoes peeled
