Chapter Five Diseases and Symptoms

The contents that we will discuss in this chapter focus on three categories. The first is disease. A disease is a pathogenic course that has a certain style of manifestation. The occurrence, development, variations, and symptoms of every disease, such as epilepsy, possess distinct regularity. The second is symptom. Symptoms are patients' subjective abnormal feelings and unusual variations inspected by doctors, such as cough, headache, fever, etc. The third is disease group, which is characterized by a major symptom, such as febrile diseases, atrophy diseases, edema, etc.

Diseases and signs are organically classified according to their attributes of pathogens and pathomechanisms, based on the internal injury, exogenous affection, five zang-organs, six fu-organs, channels, etc. For example, febrile diseases include fevers due to exogenous affection by wind and cold, fevers due to exuberance of the yin or yang caused by internal emotional injury, etc. Cough signs encompass coughs of the five zang-organs and coughs of the six fu-organs. Qi reversal signs comprise qi reversals of the six channels, qi reversals of the twelve channels, etc. All these sufficiently reveal the fundamental feature of syndrome identification and treatment determination in TCM.

The Medical Classic of the Yellow Emperor collects more than a hundred different diseases and signs. Some of them are discussed in special articles, and some are intermittently seen in many chapters. The Medical Classic of the Yellow Emperor concisely and systematically expatiates upon the pathogen, pathomechanism, clinical symptoms, classification of diagnosis, therapeutic principle and method, prognosis, and prevention of every disease. All such knowledge reflects the people's cognitive abilities with diseases in those archaic times (more than two thousand years ago).

Although it is impossible for these knowledge to be flawless in analysis and understanding, most of its ideas possess authoritative and directive importance even today, and these incisive and scientific descriptions cannot be devalued. Mastering these knowledge will be undoubtedly helpful to improve our levels of both theory and "syndrome identification and treatment determination" of TCM.
