Chapter Three

Jack opened his eyes, disoriented at first, the words Where am I? on his lips until he looked around the dimly lit room and swallowed. His throat burned. His eyes hurt to keep them open. Turning his head slightly caused ripples of pain to shoot down the sides of his neck. He heard the plaintive whimper of an animal then realized it was coming from him.

It's not possible. It can't be.

He was back in the hospital room where he'd been taken after his hysteria on the ride at Universal Studios.

"It's all right. You've had a very bad dream. You're going to be okay now, darling."

He turned his head just a little to get a closer look at her. Her gentle tone, the reassuring words felt like coming home. Her small hand on his arm comforted him. The effort of moving at all agonized him.

Jack could hardly speak. "Mom?"

She smiled. My God. It was her. The crooked bottom teeth. She was wearing the exact same outfit she'd been wearing when he first saw her in the hospital. They'd told him it was his imagination—that Nicky and Dex were not different people.

"Mom?" His heart almost broke repeating the word. He thought he'd never say it again.

"I'm here." She kept stroking at his arm, petting him lovingly. "You gave us all a shock," she said.

"How long have I been asleep?"

"You've been in a coma. We had to induce it. You injured yourself and the doctors said you needed rest."

"Nicky and Dex…"

"They're fine. They're waiting to see you. You do want to see them, don't you?"

Jack stared at her. Could it be possible? Had it all been a dream? He couldn't think straight. He closed his eyes.

"Jack?" She raised her voice and tried to infiltrate his thoughts. He wanted his mother to be alive. He wanted both his parents to be here with him. But he wanted Sean. Not Dex. He began to feel guilty now for ever having missed his old life being Nicky's father.

"Where's Dad?" he asked, fighting to keep his thoughts clear. His voice came out in a rasp. Every letter he spoke ripped through him like a slashing knife.

"He's outside, too." Her face looked uncertain for one split second. "They're only letting us in one at a time."

"How long did I sleep?"

"The doctor will tell you."

"Mom?" He held her gaze. He had to keep it together, had to keep strong.

"Yes, darling?" Stroke, stroke. Her touch felt so good.

"I need water. Please. Please, can you let me have a sip?"

"I don't… I don't think we have any."

"Yellow water jug. Table behind you."

She gave him a dazzling smile and reached for the jug, pouring a little into a plastic cup. Her hand shook a bit.

"It's heavy." She'd noticed him watching her. She put the jug back on the table and held the cup to his lips. He batted the cup away, though the gargantuan effort to do so was excruciating.

He screamed from the pain.

She shimmered as water went everywhere. She began to roar as the water hit her face.
