Chapter 9

A week passed, and Misty taught me more than just changing my face. She taught me how to change my vocal chords so that my voice sounded different, too. I had no idea that anyone in the tribe had the abilities to do such a thing. I understood the ability to change the way that they looked, but had never seen anyone do it, so it was a thing I knew existed, but hadn’t experienced. And now I had.

“I can change my appearance—hair color and eye color— and even make myself older or younger by manipulating my skin’s elasticity. I bet some of the older women in the tribe use this instead of Botox.” I laughed.

Misty stood on the other side of the kitchen, sliding the pancakes off the griddle and onto two plates for us. “I’m sure that they do.”

“And they don’t have to pay to dye their hair either?”

She shrugged. “Well, the thing is that it’s hard to keep hold of these things, remember that it’s draining on your body to do things all day. I’m sure that some might do it, but others might choose to go ahead and dye their hair since it’s easier to maintain.”

“Outside of the tribe, there are women who spend hours each day on their hair and makeup. It’s not that much more work for the tribe women to do this instead. It might even be less work for some. But are there side-effects to using this magic?” I grabbed the syrup from the pantry and set it in the middle of the table alongside the silverware.

She set a plate in front of me and one in front of herself. “If someone were to use the magic every day to get rid of their crow’s feet and their gray hairs, it’s possible that the elasticity of their skin will be lost, and they will get more wrinkles where they had none. There’s no exact science behind it, so we don’t know for sure, but I’d say that keeping everything in moderation is the best way to live. It keeps you from heading too far to one extreme or the other. Extreme behavior can lead to things getting out of control.”

“Like my stepmother has.” I stabbed a bite of pancake and shoved it into my mouth.

Misty cut off her own bite and poised it before her lips. “Her actions seem to show that she’s not allowing morality and rationality to control her actions. I’m sure she has her reasons—whatever they are. We should not try to judge people as evil. That’s extreme as well. There’s the saying that everyone is a hero in their own minds. Strive to remain open-minded at all times. See what motivations others have for their actions. Sympathize with them instead of judging. Can you do that for me, Snow?”

I finished chewing my bite of food, feeling properly chastened. Then I nodded. “It’s hard to sympathize and see things from the point of view of someone who wants me dead.
