Twelve

When the alarm clock buzzed I woke up horny, twisted in the bedsheets, heart thumping hard in my chest. All my dreams had been replays of what Daphne and I had done together: guilt, my attraction to her, nightmarish details of Chance discovering us together, what he would say. Or do. I was a mess, my body restless, already on the verge of coming. But even as I clenched my thighs, needing to get rid of all those feelings very, very quietly by hand, I saw I'd forgotten to set the alarm.

I jumped out of my bed and into the main living area. Daphne's bedroom door was closed. Gently, I rapped my knuckles against it.

"Daphne?" I called. "We've got a 10:30 call. Remember? First day of shooting for GOOD IN THE ZAK?"

It sounded like another person using my voice; someone not hungover with guilt. The voice I used sounded like I hadn't spent most of the night have completely unethical, amazing sex. A grumble from inside, and I heaved a sigh of relief.

"In a minute, OK?" she called.

Everything lightened inside me to hear her, and I covered my face with my hands. Only a little more than a week left now, the time allotted for us to wrap the film and shoot our CHANCE WITH ZAK clips. Plenty of time to get into trouble. The barest whiff of her skin lingered on mine, and I breathed it in, half convincing myself it wasn't a dream, half telling myself I had to believe it had all been if I was going to make it. That way I could look Daphne in the eye when she came out here in a few minutes, expecting her…

Quickly, I moved to the kitchen and washed my hands, but not before pressing them to my face one more time to linger in the realness of her on my skin. Then, soap and water. It never happened.

I put together her breakfast and made myself coffee. I tried not to think about how our eyes would meet, and in an instant I would know if she knew it was me. If I'd give myself away. Cursing under my breath, I started to panic, hearing her move about her room. I was going to blow this completely. She'd look at me and know. As she opened the door, I grabbed a fork out of the drawer in front of me and held it behind the counter.

"Morning," she sighed, sauntering out of the bedroom in silky boxers and a cami, her hair up in a scrunchie. If I hadn't done anything wrong, I probably wouldn't have noticed the way she acted so sleepy and casual, but her eyes were alive, studying me in quick flashes.

I dug the tines of the fork into my palm. Hard. Anything to keep from giving it all away. I opened my mouth, guilt flashing over me. Jammed the tines into my palm until they bruised me, pain a distraction so I didn't blush wildly.

"Egg whites and lemon water.
