“It’s you and Fergus,” Owen explained unnecessarily. “Do you like it?”

“I love it.” A rustic wooden frame with pokerwork evergreens and mountains along the wide bottom edge held a candid photo of Luca and Fergus sitting in profile, Luca laughing, Fergus’ ears perked and alert, both of them watching something happening out of frame. It took her a moment to realize it had been shot the afternoon they’d skated on Malcom’s rink. “I don’t remember you taking this,” she said, directing her question to Caleb but not looking away from the gift.

“I was snapping a few of Owen, and happened to notice you both sitting like this.” She felt his shrug. “I hope you don’t mind.”

“No, it’s great.” Impulsively, she leaned over and hugged Owen, still crouched at her knee. His thin, wiry arms wrapped around her neck without hesitation and she felt a swell of tenderness. When she released him, he scrambled back to his Lego, which Waldo had been regarding with active suspicion, and she turned to Caleb.

“Thank you,” she said. “Fergus is like family. I love it.” Her fingers itched to touch Caleb’s unshaven cheek, to lean in and kiss him.

His gaze drifted from her eyes to her mouth and back up again, as if he shared her longing. “You’re welcome.” His lips quirked in a wry smile. “I’m going to be making waffles soon. Want to stay for brunch?”
