AS LUCK WOULD HAVE it, Jasmine never made it to the second playoff game. An early morning call from her nursing supervisor asking her to cover a sick call propelled Jasmine out the door. The double-time paycheck, plus the weekend differential was too tempting for her to say no to.

She wrote a quick text to Donovan, telling him of her change in plans, and including a good luck wish before hitting send.

Almost immediately her phone rang.

“What are you doing up so early?” she asked him when she connected. “The sun isn’t even up yet.”

“I’ve got a wee bit of work I need to do before I leave for the game. I’ll miss seeing your smiling face in the crowd, love.”

“I’m sorry, I really am.”

“No need to apologize. I understand how important work is to you.”

“If I can, I’ll come to the after-game party. I’m assuming you’ll all be at the Love Shack again.”

“Aye, that’s the plan. Whether it’s a celebration or a wake, we’ll have to see.”

Smiling in the darkness of the car, she said, “If I know Kenny, he’s going to keep you on the bench until the twelfth hour. Just like he has before.”

“No doubt there, love.”

“Okay, well I’m at the hospital. Good luck and maybe I’ll see you later.”

“Thanks for letting me know you won’t be there. I’d be worried if I didn’t see you in the stands.”

When she ended the call she couldn’t remember anyone in recent memory who’d told her they worried about her, not even her own mother.

During her shift, one of her favorite patients took a bad turn and Jasmine stayed with her well into the evening shift. The woman died, peacefully, before the dinner hour and Jasmine was the one to comfort the family, then do the after-life care for the patient.

Dragging home after nine that night, all Jasmine wanted to do was fall into bed. Kitty’s bedroom door was closed, so thankfully she didn’t have to rehash the day or listen to her mother bitch about something.

She shucked her clothes and left them on the floor in her bathroom. After a quick shower to cleanse her of the smell of death she donned a t-shirt and crawled into bed. Before plugging her phone in to charge she clicked on the text message waiting for her from Donovan.

You’re probably busy at work, love, so I’ll tell ya quick. We won. Celebrating at the Love Shack with the team, but I miss your smiling face. Talk when ya get the chance. I’ve something I want to ask you.

Pleased for him, Jasmine dug deep for a spot of energy then hit the redial icon.

He answered immediately.

“Ah, love. You didn’t need to call.”

“I wanted to say congratulations. I’m sure you were the man of the hour once again.”

“No grand slam this time, though, just, what’s it called? A walk-off homer?”

“Good God, man, Kenny is never going to let you go.”

“Aye, he’s made that known.”

“It sounds quiet in the background. Are you still at the Love Shack?”

“Got home about a half hour ago.
