Chapter 22

Spencer Strickland’s bee journal: Bee colonies work together for a common goal, such as creating honey or luring unsuspecting single bees into a trap.

What the hell just happened?

One minute we’re having a lovely time in the river, the next, I turned into 50 Shades of Douchey. I replayed those moments the entire drive home and cringed every time.

I could have broached the subject better.

You think?

We pulled into the Pleasure Point public parking lot and discovered Darby and Drake waiting in their golf cart. I narrowed my eyes at my brother but said nothing.

Vi and I got out of my car, towels providing a flimsy barrier between our wet clothes and car seats because we didn’t bring a change of clothing to the river.

“Fancy meeting y’all here!” Darby bounced out of their cart.

“Yeah, fancy,” I drawled.

“Were you waiting for us?” Vi pulled her towel tighter around her chest.

The thought of her taut nipples underneath her T-shirt nearly caused me to pass out from the blood rushing to my dick. The only thing that kept my hard-on at bay was my brother’s shit-eating grin.

“Yeah, Dude,” I echoed Vi’s suspicion. “What are you doing here?”

“We brought an invitation, Bro.” Drake smiled. “We’ll follow you back to the sanctuary and can tell you there.”

Vi shrugged and got into the passenger side of my golf cart. We drove quickly back to my house and had no time to prepare for the arrival of Drake and Darby.

“Where’d y’all go today?” Darby grinned as we walked to the front door.

“Went canoeing.” I gritted my teeth and unlocked the door.

“Weeki Wachee?” Drake asked Vi.

She nodded.

“Like your second date.” Drake beamed.

Vi snapped her fingers. “That’s right! That was our second date, Spencer. What a coincidence!”

She shuffled into the house ahead of us. I glared at my brother, who whispered, “This is so much fun!”

I didn’t have a chance to ask what he meant because he was in the middle of the house, clapping his hands for our attention.

“I’m glad you’re back in time,” Drake announced. “Because we have an important game to win tonight.”

“What game?” Vi leaned against a kitchen counter. Her eyes lit up with the competitive spark.

“BIMBO!” Darby threw her hands in a V and wiggled her fingers at us like a cheerleader.

“Excuse me?” Vi straightened.

Darby blushed. “Oh, my bad. I wasn’t calling you a BIMBO. I was simply adding to the story Drake was telling about the BIMBO game we play once a month here on the island. It’s a lot of fun. And everyone goes. There’s a potluck, you see your neighbors, you catch up on all things Pleasure Point, and most of the time, Ziggy makes sense. It’s a cocksucking miracle, I tell ya!”

I shook my head, hoping it would knock that information into something that made sense. “What are you talking about?”

“BIMBO.” Drake clapped me on the back.

Vi hopped on one foot with her head tilted to the side. “I think I have water in my ear. Are you saying BINGO or BIMBO?”

“BIM-BO,” Drake said slowly.
