Chapter Six

The leaves fell from the trees and autumn turned to winter. Christmas was mere weeks away and they had yet to hear back from the new owners. The girls who had families to return to had already left for home and most of them were not returning. Their families had already secured them places at other schools or decided that they had as much education as they needed. The girls who remained were the ones with nowhere else to go. They would spend Christmas at the school but Iris would not.

Iris would be spending it with Peggy and her family. They had invited her to spend the entire break at their home and as they were the only thing giving the governess hope that she may be able to remain in her job, she had allowed it. The girls would join them for lunch on Christmas Day.

Peggy loved Christmas. Iris had known that before but she had never imagined the extent to which she loved it. She had barely been able to talk of anything else for weeks. They had spent their time shopping and Peggy had obsessed over finding the perfect gift for everyone, including the girls from the school. Peggy had several trees in her house that they had decorated with baubles. Peggy’s older grandchildren had helped and Iris had felt a sense of peace. It was easy to forget that they were not her family.

A few days before Christmas they sat in Peggy’s parlour. The fire roared and it was delightful. She was so used to sitting in the cold, huddled under blankets, occasionally warming her fingers over a candle but Peggy’s parlour was warm and comfortable. It was brightly lit without anyone worrying that they would use up too much oil or burn down their candles. It was a world away from what she knew.

Peggy was carefully wrapping each gift that she had bought. Iris had offered to help but Peggy had been so fussy about how the presents were presented that eventually Iris had given up and told her that she would simply observe.

It wasn’t a hardship, she liked watching her. She enjoyed the way that Peggy stuck her tongue out when she was concentrating and the little humming noise she made as she worked.

“This year has to be especially perfect,” Peggy said. “It is Margaret’s first.” She referred to her youngest granddaughter who wasn’t even a month old and had been named for her proud and doting grandmother. “I know she won’t remember it but I shall.”

“I can’t imagine it being anything but perfect.”

Christmas had never been anything special for her, though she had always appreciated the time off. As a young girl she had made her way through school by teaching the younger children and relying on the generosity of strangers, which had always made her feel like she must reach her potential, that she must work harder than everyone else. Christmas had always been a welcome break. A chance to read for pleasure and sleep later in the morning.
