He rushed to the keepers’ lodge, telling the driver to follow him in his car with the devil. The keepers emerged and were amazed by what they saw sitting in the back of the man’s car. They rushed indoors for pole nets to take the animal captive without getting near it.

In a slurred voice the man said, ‘What’s the fuss?’ Again he leaned into the back of the car, picked the thing up and plonked it, screaming with rage, into a pole net. He then challenged the keepers, ‘What’s up? Are you scared or something?’

Having disposed of the animal, he drove off into the night. The staggered keepers took the struggling Tasmanian devil back to where it came from and secured it in an inside house for the night.

The next day they saw the damage to the chain-link netting, by which time, of course, the press had been informed by somebody. They turned up and photographed the beast, the hole in the netting and the keepers describing the dreadful nature of the animal. They revelled in the story of the tipsy nightclubber who, not knowing anything about the creature’s nature, and being drunk, had known no fear and had grabbed it by the scruff of its neck in a way no keeper would ever dare to do.

The press wrote the reveller up as a hero and a brave man, conscious of his duties, but obviously he just didn’t know what it was.
