WORTH IT

A woman gave birth to a baby in a village. Everyone in town celebrated. The baby was happy and healthy, until one evening the baby suddenly fell ill and turned green. It looked as if it wouldn’t survive the night.

The villagers ran to the nearby city and asked the great master to come help save the baby’s life. The master followed them home, looked at the green baby, and instructed them to gather the ten worst thieves and scoundrels in their community and bring them to the house. “We’re going to have a ceremony to save this baby’s life,” the master said.

The villagers were stunned. Gather the worst thieves and scoundrels? That didn’t make any sense! Why wouldn’t he gather the most wonderful, lovely citizens for the ceremony?

They were deeply concerned, for the baby’s life was at stake! But they didn’t want to doubt him and his wisdom, so they acquiesced.

The ten worst thieves and scoundrels were rounded up and asked to participate in the ceremony. They, too, were confused; this was a first. But they agreed, and all night they sang and chanted with the master, until, when morning came, the baby was no longer green. Its life had been saved.

As the master departed, several citizens followed him. They stopped him at the edge of town and asked about his strange ceremony, and how it could possibly have worked. To which he replied:

“Sometimes the gates to heaven are so tightly locked, it takes a thief to pry them open.”
