Chapter 17

"No. Absolutely not!" I couldn't believe what they were suggesting.

This time, Aunt Ruth spoke.

"Think about it, sugar. Geoffrey is working with Sapphire for some reason, and I personally believe has very little to do with opening the bed and breakfast. They each have reason to want something from you, either for you to run back to them or for you to fail."

"Well, thank you very much," I grumbled.

Aunt Ruth flashed a smile but continued.

"I think they probably met through Belinda and realized that they could use each other to get what they wanted. Now, Geoffrey knows that you have magic. I don't know how much he realizes about all of this, but he's dangerous, and so is Sapphire."

"What about Lindy?" Eve asked. "Do you think she's involved?"

I shook my head. "I never met her while we were dating, but I recalled Geoffrey talking about her. He thought she was pretty empty-headed, and I thought she was harmless. I think she just had the unfortunate fortune of being related to him and being roommates with Sapphire."

Josie was nodding her head slowly, but Eve didn't look convinced.

"I don't see how she could be going into business with them and living in the bed and breakfast without at least some understanding of what they are up to," she said.

I had to admit that the idea seemed improbable, but Lindy gave off such Golden retriever energy that I couldn't believe she could be malevolent. She might fit in well with me, Piper, and Eve.

"And Geoffrey has no magic in his veins, correct?" Calvin asked.

I shook my head. "I never saw anything remotely magical about him. I can't see why he would team up with Sapphire if he had his own magic."

Finn nodded. "That makes sense. He wouldn't need her if he could work his own magic."

"But what if he's working with her precisely because he has his own magic?" Eve argued. "What if the weird magic signature we're getting from the zombies is a combination of both of their magic?"

No one answered. That was an angle that we hadn't considered. But if Geoffrey had always had magic, why had I never seen any? Then again, I hadn't known that I was a witch because my mother had put a suppression spell on me at my birth. My head was beginning to ache. I picked the chopsticks back up and forced myself to eat more sweet-and-sour pork, but it didn't taste very good anymore.

"So what does that have to do with using Cooper as bait?" I asked after chewing for a moment.

"Well, it requires us to work under the assumption that Sapphire's ultimate goal is to win Cooper back, and Geoffrey's ultimate goal is to win you back," Finn explained. I shook my head from side to side before he finished his sentence.

"I can't see Geoffrey going to all this trouble to win me back. It would make more sense that he's trying to punish me for breaking up with him," I insisted.

Piper and Eve shared another glance.
