MAC, WILKES, AND ELAM

They’d finished their tour of Maiden Castle Hill and, upon rising the next morning, had walked for most of the day, only stopping long enough to have a small meal and some water. Mac was convinced Benjie was dogging their every step and would be upon them at any moment.

Elam was sitting on a small rock and had removed his boots as they settled for the night.

Wilkes snatched one from him. “You’ve been walking in these the entire time?” She was poking her fingers through the multiple holes in the sole.

“Yep. Benjie doesn’t want me to have good shoes. He says if I’m not going anywhere, what do I need them for? But everybody likes to have nice shoes. I can never have a proper cocktail party without appropriate footwear.”

“What?” Wilkes cocked her head slightly to the side. “Forget it. Mac, Elam needs better shoes for his clocks and jail party.”

Mac was a few feet away, tending to a small fire. They were in a dense thicket, and he felt reasonably confident no one would be able to see the glow until they were upon it. And besides, he was cold enough that he didn’t care. “Sorry?” He looked over as he furiously rubbed his hands near the flames. “Are you kidding me?” He took the boot from Wilkes. “How are you walking around in these?”

“Are these not good? I’m sorry, Mac! I will leave them here, I am so embarrassed. If there is an alternative I’ll be upset with myself for missing it.”

“No, Elam! No need to be upset. I only wish you had said something, we could have looked for a better pair today.” He wasn’t sure if he meant that or not. He could not shake the feeling that the Wolves were close, and spending time they didn’t have, looking for shoes for a person that had put their lives at even greater risk just by his presence, wasn’t likely. He debated going out now, alone, to try and find something more adequate, but he was tired, hungry, and cold, and now irritated that they were going to be slowed down even further.

“He looks upset,” Elam stage whispered to Wilkes. “Maybe this will help.” Elam took off his backpack and rummaged through it.

Mac wasn’t sure how he was going to react if the man took out another beanie baby to show him. Instead, Elam took out a package wrapped in brown paper and tied with a string. “Want some jerky, Mac?”

The cold and exhaustion melted away as they chewed through some food. Most of the time, Mac’s eyes were closed in a sort of rapturous event as he ate. Wilkes peeked into the oversized bag.

“Wow, Elam, how much food do you have in here?”

“A whole month’s worth,” he told her as he licked his fingers.

“Hold on.” Mac opened his eyes and looked at the man. “We’ve been foraging for food these last couple of days, we had clover for dinner yesterday, and you have
