Nick

The paint tin slips in my hands, and I just manage to catch it before any sloshes over the sides. I wipe my sweaty palms on my overalls and glance up at the door.

It’s early the next morning, and my heart is racing in anticipation of seeing Zoey again.

The front door bangs downstairs, and I hear her call out to Brook. I almost drop the paint.

By the time she makes it up the stairs, I’ve managed to get my breathing under control. Until she walks in the door wearing leggings that hug the curves of her thighs and a tight t-shirt pulled over her large breasts.

The blood heads straight to my dick. I have to turn away so she doesn’t see the boner that’s pushing through my overalls.

“Hey,” she says breezily, like she’s got no idea of the effect she’s having on me.

“Hey.” It comes out strangled, and I cough to hide the unmanly squeak in my voice.

I crouch next to the paint and prep the sprayer for her, not trusting myself to look at her. “You sleep alright at Violet’s?” It’s not a great conversation starter, but I feel awkward around her today, tongue-tied like I’m seventeen years old again.

“She’s got the most uncomfortable couch ever. And it was so hot I stripped off my pajamas.”

The image of her without pajamas thrusts itself into my head, and this time I do spill the paint.

“Shit.” It pools on the tarpaulin, a sea-green mess.

I stand up to get a rag at the same time as she crouches, and our heads collide. There’s a whack and a dull thud.

“Oww.” She holds her head in her hands and staggers backward.

“Shit. Are you all right?” In one stride I’m next to her, my hands resting on her shoulders. “I’m sorry, Zoey.”

She shakes her head slowly. “I’m okay, just a bump.”

She moves her hand away, and I tilt her chin up to take a look. “You’ll probably have a bruise.”

“You’ve got a thick head.” She tries to smile and winces.

My thumb brushes over the angry lump that’s forming on her forehead. Her skin’s warm under my touch, and I’m aware of how close she is.

She’s gone still, and when I dare to lower my gaze to her eyes she’s looking at me, her eyes wide and searching.

Time seems to stand still, and for a moment I’m taken back to four years ago, when she was mine to touch and hold and kiss no matter how awkwardly I did it.

“Nick…”

Her lips part to say my name, and it’s like a siren’s call. I’m not an awkward seventeen-year-old anymore. I’m a grown-ass man, and this woman is pulling on all my manly instincts.

My hand slides around the back of her neck and I pull her toward me, pressing her lips onto mine.

She gasps in surprise and then she’s kissing me back, her lips as soft and sweet as I remember. Her thighs brush against mine and I slide my other arm around her waist, pulling her against me.
