Chapter 18

Damian

The sun was just about to set, the light haze covering the yellow sky on the horizon beginning to blend into the blanket of night. We were gathered behind Gaelle’s house, in the woods, inside a Zol ring that Gaelle had created by placing rocks in a large circle and painting the twelve zodiac glyphs on them.

“You need to mow your lawn. You can barely see the Zol ring,” I grunted.

“The mower’s in the shed. You’re more than welcome.” She held her hand out toward the shed, a teasing glimmer in her eye.

“Sure. I’ll get to it when we make the Climb back.” I rubbed the back of my neck as I forced myself to remember that this was worth it. I owed it to Sasha to do everything I could to get her out of there. She would do this for me. She would do it for any of us.

“You should know, I’ve only done one Descent, ever. And I still have no idea how it went for my aunt. If you see her down there, send her my love, will you?”

Jenna’s eyes opened wide, and she reached for Lex’s hand. He gripped hers tightly.

“That’s not true,” I said. “What about Mira and Lizbel? They made the Climb that night after you dared them to descend. I was here.”

A golden glow rose from the stones painted with the zodiac glyphs, and I realized then that she had used mirth color from the Zol Sen. How she had gotten ahold of them, I had no idea. But now I understood how she was able to perform this ceremony. Mirth color was only found in the deep caves of Scorpio Gate, in the most remote desert valley. The colors of the clay rock from that part of the desert were said to also exist inside the caves of Xibalba. The legends said that a colony of giants had mined the colors and brought them to the center of the desert before it was even a desert, and before Xibalba was secluded in the deep folds of the planet. The stories of mirth color were more legend than anything. No one dared to go looking for the mirth color, because it was surrounded by a colony of giant scorpions.

The golden glow hovered behind us as Gaelle’s black eyes became wide with wildness. She circled her hands in the air, whisking the glow around us. The charge from the energy felt like static at my back as it connected to my skin. The energy was reaching for me. Gaelle began to chant in the old Celtic tongue, singing her script, which was a spell unique to her and her gifts. It was her ability
