Chapter 19
Mia was backed up against the hood of her car. Ron was so close to her she could feel the heat emanating from his body. There was a hell of a lot of energy coming out of this hundred-and-fifty-year-old retired werewolf. But Ronâs reputation didnât involve only his physical power but also his ability to control and influence his wolves.
He lived up to his reputation. He was so close to shifting and letting his anger get the better of him, but he refrained. In a short time, he had composed himself.
âYou accused me of hurting Aubree. You must have some kind of evidence?â
Mia straightened herself up. âYouâve been retired for a long time. Iâm guessing you donât have access to technology and data resources.â
âEven when I was in charge, I didnât endorse technology. We have a long lifespan, but I refuse to invest a second of my life in nonsensical information and practices. Aubree was the only human I loved. So much that I married her. Why would I want to hurt her?â
âI came here to ask you that very question.â
âIs she all right?â
âFor now, yes. But it seems as if something from the past has come up. She and her son received a death threat. I helped with the investigation, and that was when I came across the information about the Lilipearl. If someone like me can get that information, then the whole world out there can get it, too.â
âI didnât do it. On the contrary, I gave her access to all my available resources. Anything that could help us have children. But I did think that Aubree couldnât bear a werewolf child because of the difference in our species. After we divorced, however, I had several mates. And I figured out it was me who couldnât have offspring.â
âIf your mates kept taking Lilipearl, not only would they be affected, you would too. In a while, it would prevent you from having children or cause you to have deadliners. Iâm not sure which is worse.â
âThereâs nothing wrong with being a deadliner, Mia.â
âYou wouldnât say that if you were rejected by your own family.â
âYour family is wrong. Life is a miracle. If they canât see that, they donât deserve you.â
He came closer. âYou came to ask me if I gave Lilipearl to Aubree. The answer is no. I loved her. Did she have a family? Is she happy?â
Mia nodded. âYou let her go with a clean slate. She married a doctor and had a son, who is now a police detective. Iâd say she is very contented with her life.â
âAnd you, are you happy with your life out there with the humans?â
âSo far, so good.â
He nodded. âIs there anything else I can help you with?â
âIf you didnât poison Aubree, someone else did. Donât you want to find out?â
âIâm an old lone wolf now. What can I do? You should leave now, Mia.â
âAll right.â She turned and walked toward the driverâs side door.
âWhen I say leave, I mean it. Donât go to the clan and stir up trouble.
