List Attributes

Listing attributes works equally well for physical challenges and for abstract, conceptual challenges. This technique is so powerful, it can help you come up with all possible creative solutions to a problem.

For example, I often wonder—as I sit in traffic—“How can I reduce the length of my commute to work?”

Start by deconstructing the problem, breaking it into its component parts. For my commute problem, I decided its components were

Reduce

Length

Commute

Work

The second step is to examine each of those components and list its attributes. For example, the attributes of work are:

1. Work is what I do to make money.

2. Work is at the office.

3. Work is Monday through Friday.

4. At work, I have a boss.

5. At work, I have a project with a schedule and a deadline.
