Monday, August 31st *Evening*

Year - 27514

I had to look closer at Ezra’s image then, so I touched it and zoomed in. “How did they infect her?”

“I can’t presume to know that, it’s an intimate detail,” he coughed.

Heat flushed up Ezra’s face, and the world almost swallowed me. Alek looked at me and so did Lena, she tried not to cringe at my discomfort.

“I thought you would have by now,” Alek said. “It’s nothing to be ashamed of, either of you.”

“I—” she started, her eyes low. “I wanted to feel beautiful.”

“You already know I think you’re beautiful, with or without the tech.” When she pulled away from me slightly, I let her and met the doctor’s eyes with mine. “We’re not having sex, nor have we made the bond properly. What you see is just how in tune and how well-matched we are. As for the ‘nites, maybe I can ask Ivori?”

“Well, you see, they’re the problem,” he said. “They’re the ones rejecting the tech. They don’t want it in her.”

“That makes some sense,” Lena said. “They’re older, much older than anything we have here now.”

“Yes,” he said. “My options are to remove the nanites, or the tech.”

“I get the feeling taking the nanites out is much harder than the tech?” I asked.

“Correct.” He stared at me. “I can’t order them. I’m not even sure you could, or Ivori.”

I shook my head. “I can,” I said, thinking back to the tag race I had with Alek in front of the reporters.

I focused in on the nanites and their red line began to leave Ezra’s body for mine. Simple as that. Just an ask. Yet, no sooner than they’d all left, they ran back.

I tried again, and again, exasperated. “Yeah, they’re not listening.”

“I have no idea of their exact science or programming,” Styx admitted. “But I’ve been learning some of their coding. Slowly, with a little help from Ivori, when she’s been willing.”

“You’ve been busy,” I said. “Do you ever sleep?”

He shook his head, rubbed his eyes. “With you around?” He chuckled lightly then too, not meaning to sound so serious. “Not really. There’s so much I want to learn. I thank you for the opportunity to be around you.”

“How can we help Ezra?” Alek asked. “You think you have something, or you wouldn’t be operating, right?”

He flicked the screen again. “I believe the prosthetic is breaking down because the nanites are pulling some of its components out to replicate more nanites. But if we can create a prosthetic without those elements, it may eliminate the problem.”

Ezra’s face frowned, but her eyes focused on the image as Styx zoomed in.

“If we use different components, they’re not going to destroy it?” Lena asked.

“I don’t believe they will. The issue is—”

I tugged Ezra back to me, knowing. “—it will be an old prosthetic with no skin.”

Ezra nodded at me. “I’ll never be able to wear dresses in summer again.”

Lena moved in beside her. “Here, darling, let me show you a little something.” We all
