22. Deserters and Farewells

Thirst nearly broke Joey’s focus. The temptation to use his stasis skill grew. But movement on the peripherals snapped him out of his stupor.

It came from the river. A first glance suggested a rough log. A big one. Two hungry eyes blinking at the front of the log revealed the truth.

Joey dove into the river and faced another beast that was trying to snack on the denizens. Analyze gave him a brief description: [Tidal Moon Beast: Small Reptile: Croc lvl 38].

It was big for a small reptile – thirty feet long. But it was only a level above Joey.

Combat swimming and Shade Dragon Tail turned Joey into a deadly threat in the water. He slipped under the croc’s lunging bite and drew his kunai knives from his harnesses.

He stabbed the underbelly three times before dipping under a tail swipe. He came around again as the monster turned and went for a double stab to the eyes, piercing deep.

Blinded, the croc thrashed and snapped its jaws in a frenzy. Joey used Dark Dash to reverse out of the way, waiting for the beast to stop.

Then a realization struck Joey. Don’t I have something that can end this faster?

This was not the time to test himself in water combat. He had his denizens to protect.

He resurfaced, breathed deep for three seconds, then dove back down. He exhaled shady flames onto the croc’s face and over some of its torso.

Joey swam back to Curi’s body as the croc boiled to death from the inside out. He gave the latest system message a glance before dismissing it, confirming the slaying of the croc.

The experience awarded gave him no new levels. That was fine. He was better off with his path staying at level 37 when infiltrating the adventurer hub. Though, if he wanted to control his semblance, he needed to be level 41.

A combination of personal power and essence control was required when dealing with semblances. Al Bruce Crabton was level 51, which was out of Joey’s range. It was a good thing he hadn’t summoned the hull crusher bruiser or something bad could’ve happened.

I’ll deal with my semblance later, the skill levels matter way more. This was true, but Joey couldn’t concentrate on training until his pair of denizens woke up.

Once the adrenaline died down, Joey’s thirst returned with ferocity. His tongue felt heavy and his throat ached. With all of his stuff stored away in Curi’s spatial power, Joey had no way to drink fresh water.

I can’t wait anymore. Joey knelt on the sand beside Mollysea and shook her by the shoulders.

“Mollysea. Specialist. Specialist Mollysea. Wake up. You have to snap out of it. I need your help.” Joey shook and shook, but he received no response from the traumatized siren.

Weakness entered his mind. His heart quivered. For a moment, he considered quitting. But the dragon in him raged with pride, so Joey hardened himself.

“Dammit, Mollysea, wake up!” he shouted.

Her hand snatched Joey by the throat. Her grip was crushing, and it took a lot to keep from gouging her eyes out with his knives.
