Chapter. 21: Maxing a Skill

I opened my eyes to see a world of shadows.

The wind strangely was a bunch of gray streaks passing through my vision. My hair was ruffled and yet, it was all so familiar. My gaze wandered everywhere, spinning as I finally caught sight of a figure off in the distance. His cape swung in the wind like a banner.

Without thoughts or consideration, I ran in his direction as he called my name.

“Sybil, it’s nice to see you are doing well, but unfortunately you cannot linger in Laiken much longer.”

I slowed down, it sounded like his voice was right next to me. Something similar had happened last time— no matter how much I ran, I wouldn’t be able to get closer than around five meters, and so, after reaching that distance I sat down.

“Why?”

I swear I almost heard his smile. “Your fate is not there. You should go to the armory after a day’s work. Grow slightly stronger— pass through the armory and then leave. There are no more riches to be found in Laiken, and the information you'll keep finding is scarce.

"At the same time a tide is forming.”

I frowned. “A tide of monsters?”

“No.” His head shook. “Not something like that. The more you wait the harder it will be to leave the Grand Mine of Armag Hollow.”

“That—”

“No arguing.” He chuckled. “Fate has made its move, now it is time for you to make yours. Survive, and leave this place. Reach for greatness, Sybil.”

“Right…” I took a breath. “Any advice regarding… The Beyond?”

He turned to me, his cloak leading to nothing but a black void. He brought his hand to his chin, seemingly deep in thought.

“Five skills.”

“What?” I asked in confusion as he turned back.

“There is a limit of five skills per aspect, but it’s something I will advise you on later.” He shook his head. “Danger awaits you. That said try to leave as soon as you can.”

I looked at the ground of shadows, my feet standing on what seemed like air. For a moment, hesitation filled me, but at the same time after taking a deep breath, I decided to trust my father.

“I’ll try to leave as soon as possible.”

He let out a laugh. “We both know you are going to check out the armory first no matter what. Just be prepared, as I said. Danger awaits.”

I nodded grievously. “What kind of danger?”

“You might die, but I hold hope.” His words gave me pause. “I’ll give you a hint, those shells of yours can be loaded with mana stones. Their damage is slightly weaker but are much more effective in your hands.”

He turned around and began to walk away, waving his head.

“That is all for now, Sybil.”

I stared as he walked away, for a moment I didn’t know what to say, or even if I had or should call out to him.

But finally, with some hesitation, I asked.

“Did I do well?”

“You did.”

With those words, my vision became black for a moment, and then— I saw the orange light of the library.
