Chapter

Twenty

“N in!”“She’s alive,” I called to Ema after checking that the girl was still breathing and had a pulse. Easing her down to the ground, I looked up at Ema as she stopped and stared at the pile of cordage. “I think she’s passed out.”

“A fingers width of that cord takes a month to weave… She made a lifetime’s worth in moments… how?”

“The magic is good at creating,” I said with a shrug and kept to myself that I guessed it would be equally efficacious at destroying.

“Why didn’t you fall unconscious when you used it? Did she use too much?”

I shook my head, confused at that point as well. Nin had drawn less of the Gift into herself than I had, and if anything, sent it to complete a lesser task. I couldn’t have done the same as her because I didn’t know the intricacies of the weave, but shifting rock and sand while molding stone had taken more raw power.

“Perhaps we have different natural power levels,” I said.

“Nin has been a Sorcera for three summers and you received the Gift last evening, Daniel… How powerful are you?”

Her gaze shifted to the wide swath of smooth stone and the angular spar that I’d transformed, then fell upon the oblong stone that rocked gently in the breeze. She might not understand the technology, but she looked from it to me, and I saw a touch of reverence enter her eyes.

“My head,” Nin croaked, her eyes blinking open slowly as she reached up to press a hand to her skull. When she saw my concerned frown, she blushed and said, “I was overambitious in my cast.”

“Tell me everything,” I said, helping her to her feet.

Nin blinked at my hands on her wrist and elbow, and I could see it would take her a while to adjust to the new reality. I wanted to sweep

her into my arms and kiss her again, but I left her to gather herself as she walked through what happened.

“I was about to open the gateway when your mind… gripped mine.” Nin shrugged. “That is the only explanation I have for it. Like how we can smother the Gift of another when it manifests if we’re quicker, stronger, and close enough.”

“I wasn’t sure what I did,” I said with a shrug. “But what you were doing felt… dangerous.”

“We should make our way down to the Lodge,” Ema said, frowning in concern at her sister. “Are you well enough to make it down the mountain? Do you want Brisbane paste?”

“No, I need a clear head.” Nin shook her head and sighed as she reached for her pack.

“Then let me take this,” I said.

She smiled at me gratefully when I took the pack and slung it over my back. The straps were narrow and the fit on my wider back awkward, but it wasn’t heavy, and it felt good to be carrying something.

“Whatever you did, Daniel, it kept me from accessing the Gift. A frightful power.” Nin was disturbed by
