I have kept Oberst Achen abreast of the situation, and we both agreed that it would be important to begin executing the infected boys before things get out of hand. I, however, continue to hold my position that we should not kill all of them so that they can be studied. After explaining my reasoning to him, he reluctantly agreed, but he cautioned me to take extra care in this matter. I will do as he orders, and I am glad that we were able to come to a compromise.
We have had a difficult time trying to figure out how to kill the infected. I have discussed this issue with my friend, Major Hirsch. The problem is that here at Gross-Rosen, we do not have gas chambers, so Zyklon B is not an option until, at the earliest, we get another supply shipment. Because of our lack of resources, we do not have an easy and effective way to eliminate entire wings of the building if and when necessary. I have expressed my concerns about putting even trained soldiers in the same room as these boys, and I have had Hirsch observe with me the effects of the disease. He quickly agreed, and we decided that the best course of action would be to have the most skilled riflemen shoot the diseased boys through the bars in the windows as I had done before.
This matter is further complicated because Oberst Achen wants to resolve the problem before any of the other camps receive word, so he has ordered shipments of incoming supplies to be delayed until we have returned to some sort of state of normalcy.
We began the executions in the afternoon. One soldier thought it would be “fun” to fight an infected boy with bare hands only. The man entered the room and was quickly taken off guard by the boy. The man was dead within a matter of minutes. The report I overheard was that he was literally torn limb from limb, but I dared not inquire further. I have a strong stomach, but I wanted no part in any of that. The boy nearly escaped from the building before he was gunned down. The remains of the soldier and the boy were incinerated, and the hall and room in which the events occurred were sanitized. I heard that the careless soldier’s official record will indicate that he was “killed in action.” True, I suppose.
The remaining inmates are separated into two blocks, one for men and one for boys, and work details have been suspended temporarily. Since anyone who has experienced puberty seems to be unaffected, we are considering that to be the cut-off for sending someone to the boys’ new quarters. I feel that it is inevitable that all of the boys will eventually become infected with the noma mutation, so it is the only way to keep the rest of the prisoners safe.
