The woods grew deeper and darker the further they moved through the trees.
Blaze hacked and chopped along the barely visible broken trail he and the vixen were following. It started to grow dark far earlier this deep in the forest, and the sounds were far more eerie.
The vixenâs lead was true. But she veered to the right as the sun was disappearing, and not a hundred feet later, Blaze stood on a river beach, overlooking a deep, clear calm pool.
âWhy, thank you, Vix. I was starting to worry.â
She looked up from her spot on the river bank. âYip.â Quickly she went back to her drink.
Blaze looked up at the sky and decided that the tent was worth it. It was clear, and the day had been cool. They hadnât made it nearly as far as the day before, barely six miles.
Once he had the tent up, Blaze went about refilling his water with the cool stream waterâand a conditioning tablet in each. He started a small, concentrated fire, designed for cooking and heat and nothing more.
The fox had watched him the whole time, but there was something different about her pose and posture. She was definitely on high alert, ears pricked and twitching.
He heated up more beans and choked down another ration of Vienna sausages. He offered one up to the vixen, but even she turned up her nose.
âGo, hunt,â Blaze said.
âNip.â
âIâm fine here.â
âNip.â
âVix, really. Iâm okay.â
She didnât answer and instead sat on a rock near the river. She was nervous. Something in these woods didnât agree with her.
Blaze took the hint. He tamped down the already tiny fire to a few glowing embers. He made sure his pack was secure in the tent.
It wasnât long after dark that the sounds started and Blaze felt eyes on his back. The sounds were soul-peircing...howls, chirps, barks, growls. There were whistles and calls and sounds he couldnât identify at all. Vix moved closer and closer to him, until she was finally sitting next to him.
âYou donât like this place.â There was no question.
The fox gave a small squawk and looked around through the dark. There was no other way to explain how her bright eyes pierced the darkness surrounding them. She edged closer and closer until he could feel her soft, red fur against him.
âWhatâs out there?â Blaze didnât want an answer. The pitch black of the trees was a welcome shield against whatever evil was lurking.
The lines are weak, the demons are trying to press through.
Blaze turned to find those golden eyes looking at him. There was no doubt that the vixen was the source of the answer.
He gave up and surrendered to the forest madness. âLines. Like leylines?â
Exactly that. There are several that run through Woodland Creek.
âThatâs why Halloween is so big here. The Old Townies are actually keeping the spirits appeased.â
âYip.â
âOh, now I thought we knew each other more than a yip or a nip.â
The faint echo of a laugh drifted through his mind, and the vixen nosed at his cheek.
