In addition to preparing the food carefully, during Zen training we must see and be respectful of the nature of each ingredient. Dogen Zenji, a great Zen master, wrote a book entitled Instructions to the Cook. This book is considered seminal in Zen practice. His careful instructions to the cook in handling ingredients must also be understood as instructions for handling the ingredients of our lives and relationships. Each person we meet is another ingredient. One may appear to be a delicacy, another a simple green.
