Karen stopped short at the noise she heard inside the large dining room. She'd decided to clear her head and instead of having Eileen bring her lunch, she wanted to eat with Mary-Ann, but she didn't know they woman had company.

She stood in the doorway and saw the men gathered around the large trestle table, getting their meal.

“Ah, there you are Karen!” Mary-Ann exclaimed as she spotted her. “The gang decided to come in out of the cold for some of my beef stew. You finally came out of the office without me having to come and root you out.” She hurried forward and linked her hand through Karen’s arm.

“There's also hot chocolate,” Billy told her with a grin. “How about I fix you a plate, Karen?”

“Thanks.” She'd become fast friends with the lanky man who did various odd jobs in and around the ranch. The other three—Greg, Bobby and Frank—were older men who were part of the sales team.

“There's also key lime pie,” Mary-Ann announced as she went back into the large spacious kitchen. A few minutes later she came back out with the pie, her eyes widening as she looked up and saw her nephew coming into the room. “Darling! You never said you would be home for lunch.”

“I just came by to collect some things I need for a meeting.” Zachary’s eyes zeroed in on the woman standing between Billy and Gregg, his lips tightening as he saw that Billy had his hand on her arm. “Billy, I need an update as soon as you're finished with lunch.”

“Of course, boss.” The man looked as if he was about to shovel the food into his mouth so that he could finish and get to the job.

“Let the boy eat in peace,” Mary-Ann protested. “I'm fixing you a plate, darling, have a seat.”

He nodded briefly and went over to pour himself a cup of coffee. He was careful not to acknowledge her, but he was so aware of her presence that he was hard put not to go over where she was standing and drag her into his arms. He could have gone to his meeting without getting the notes, but he wanted to come back and see her, feast his eyes on her. It hadn't been a very good idea. Seeing her in the company of other men was driving him nuts, even if it was innocent. He'd listened to his friend talk about love and second chances and had told him bluntly that he was a fool. But he wasn't sure he was right. He'd seen the look on Nathan’s face and admitted to himself that what he shared with Norma-Lee was real.

He was cynical about affairs of the heart because of what he'd grown up in. He'd seen his mother fade away, her beautiful face ravaged both by the pain of her illness and her husband’s betrayal and had sworn that he would never put a woman through that. But he'd been heading down into dangerous territory ever since she came to the ranch and he had no idea what to do about it.
