Chapter Eleven

Triple D

Sena never imagined running into Hazel. Which was stupid, come to think of it. It was a small town. It was bound to happen at some point. And why wouldn’t Hazel be out having fun with friends? What did Sena expect? That Hazel would be home alone, eating frozen dinners, stewing on how her life had gone so wrong, aching to touch the woman sleeping just steps away, worrying that she had missed out on the chance of a lifetime, fixated on how to make it right, wondering if that might be possible somehow? Hoping beyond hope that it was. Well, yes. That was what Sena expected. Because that’s what Sena’s life had become.

But here was Hazel. Looking relaxed and happy. Like nothing had ever happened. Sena grabbed her fitted black dress at the seams, adjusted it with a flip of her wrists, and threw her hair over one shoulder. Then she stood tall and marched herself over to where Hazel was sitting. She was glad she was wearing her favorite boots because she was suddenly in a shit-kicking mood. Hazel had some explaining to do.

“Is this seat taken?”

Hazel jumped.

“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to startle you.”

“You didn’t…I mean, you did. I mean, it doesn’t matter.” Hazel swiveled around on her stool to look at her. “Oh, hell.”

In the dim light, Hazel’s blue eyes were dark as the desert sky in moonlight. Sena melted. Right then and there. A snowball on the side of a sand dune. She didn’t want to be angry. She couldn’t be. She didn’t know how Hazel had done it, but this quirky, unexpected woman had pierced a hole in the wall that had grown around her heart. Even though it still hurt that Hazel had run away, and she was confused as hell, that hole had become a crack, and each day bits of that wall were falling away. She would always be thankful for that.

Sena lightly brushed Hazel’s cheek with the back of her hand. “My favorite librarian swears like a truck driver, I see.”

Hazel flinched again. Her face was hot against Sena’s hand and her eyes hardened as she pulled away. “I’m sorry, Sena. I guess I have no idea what else to say.”

“How about, it’s good to see you, Sena?”

Hazel’s gaze thudded to the floor. “I’m not sure that it is.”

Sena reached out a finger to lift her chin, but Hazel shivered hard at the touch. This was not going well. So, impulsively, Sena did the one thing she hoped might turn things around. She told the truth.

“I’ve missed you, Hazel.”

And there it was.

She traced Hazel’s jawline with a finger, down along her neck and across the deep edge of her silky tank top, and Hazel’s body shuddered. An electric current shot up Sena’s arm, down the middle of her body, exploding between her legs.

Panic erupted in Hazel’s eyes and she grabbed Sena’s wrist. “Please, stop.” Her voice dropped to something just below a whisper. But it was loud enough for Sena to hear.
