Chapter Ten

Cecily strode through the restaurant with a casual confidence he envied. As an attorney, she was probably accustomed to high-end places like this and dealing with movers and shakers, but a part of him was still a Brooklyn boy at heart. Even though he’d been to his share of Hollywood events, he couldn’t help feeling a bit out of place. It was so in-your-face upscale. Give him a hole-in-the-wall restaurant with cheap but delicious food any day.

She was wearing a red and white floral wrap dress that looked incredible on her. And skyscraper heels that made him wince just looking at them.

“Nice dress,” he commented.

Cecily raised a warning brow. “I’m dressing appropriately for the venue. This has nothing to do with you.”

“Noted.” So that was how she was going to be.

She sat down opposite him and opened her menu.

The waiter came over to their table and discreetly poured them both a glass of ice water. Then he saw Cecily and immediately beamed.

“Ms. Chang, how lovely to see you again.”

“Hi, Kenji, how are you? I told you, call me Cecily.”

“I’m good, thank you. Are you ready to order?”

“I think I may need another minute to look over the menu and specials.” Kenji then turned to Jeffrey.

“And for you, sir?”

“Just water for now, thank you.” Kenji gave a slight bow of his head and walked away. Jeffrey then turned to Cecily with a raised brow and a You are so busted look.

“What?” she asked defensively.

“I’ve always wanted to come here but it’s out of my price range?”

“It’s technically true. I was here only once before but it was for a work thing, so I didn’t pay. I can’t afford a meal here, and I’ve always wanted to come back.”

“I call bullshit. You’re on a first-name basis with the waiter.”

“That’s different. I helped Kenji out with a landlord tenant thing, pro bono.”

As if out of thin air, Kenji came back out and set down a plate of food. With a beam he announced, “Grilled abalone and green bean tempura with ponzu sauce. On the house.”

To Cecily’s credit she had the grace to look a bit chagrined.

“Thank you,” Jeffrey replied drily.

“Are you ready to order?”

“I’ll have the king crab sunomono and cucumber salad.”

“Just the appetizers, sir?”

“For now.”

“Order something else,” Cecily insisted. “You’ll finish off both in two bites each. You’ll starve.”

“You said you were going to order the menu. I’m just preparing my wallet.”

Cecily rolled her eyes. “You know I was kidding. I’m not that evil.”

“I don’t know. I’ve seen you. You’ve had your moments.”

She just gave him a look.

“Why don’t you order for us? I trust you.”

With a shake of her head, she did. Then she turned back to him and laid her hands on the table. “Well, you got me here. Now what?”

“I thought we could have a nice meal, get to know each other again.”

“I’m going to need a lot of sake for that,” she muttered.

“Oh come on. Ten years is a long time. This could be fun and interesting. Am I really that bad?”

Her head poked up over the top of the menu and she just gave him a look.
