Chapter 8

YRIK

Dolson greets me as we arrive at our hidden camp in the valley. Gemma's eyes widen as she looks around. "This place is within view of your mountaintop home. It’s amazing that I never saw it.”

I point to the top of the trees. "We put stealth nets above the trees. Not only does it hide our heat signature, but it also hides any movement below it as well. They can fly around in their fancy ships all they want and never know we are here," I tell her.

Dolson smiles as he looks at Gemma. "This must be your Terran mate," he says.

Gemma's face blushes. I smile as I nod. "She will be, soon, I hope," I reply. She doesn't counter me as she shyly smiles at my friend.

"I'll put you two in a split tent, then," he tells us.

I turn to Gemma. "Is that alright with you? We will be in the same tent, but you'll have your own little room.”

She grabs hold of my arm, squeezing it tightly. "As long as you are near me, Yrik.”

Gemma warms my heart, giving me energy to move forward. I would like more than anything else to be able to propose to her in the Terran tradition. But for now, that will have to wait. This pressing matter is indeed a matter of life and death. My very home is at stake.

"Being here, this is located most centrally. We have guards posted around the boundaries and the Neerians don't know we are here. You'll be safe in the tent for now," I say to her.

Before Gemma can protest, I walk out the door to join the others. At the meeting tent, many Ogottians have gathered. The strongest of those willing to fight have come to our camp. Dolson soon calls the meeting to order, and we lay out the battle plan.

"The Neerian military landed at the airfield near Ottqu just over the ridge. They are already in formation and ready to launch an attack." Dolson looks at each one.

"I hate how the Neerians won't negotiate. It's terrible that they won't even talk to us first," Evese says. He is the leader of the Ogottian military

"You already knew that about our kind. Those of us here have pledged our allegiance to the Ogottians and we will fight with you in this battle. We can try to talk to them, but I'm not certain they'll listen," I reply.

"Such is the nature of barbarians," Evese responds.

While discussing our strategic plans, one of the spies from the field comes in after watching our enemy. Blasie, one of the Neerians who have chosen this planet as his home, is breathless. He has news as he looks at me.

"Yrik, they've gone back to your home and didn't find you. I think the general realizes now that you will not fight for them. They have put a large bounty on your head," he tells me.

I'm glad Gemma isn’t here to hear this. I look at my friends and hope our loyalty continues to hold.
