ROM-E0

I knew before Avan-8 spoke the words. I saw the woman walking up the path to our door, face drawn with a nervous anxiety, eyes a little red and tired. It’d been years since I’d seen one of them, ever since my eyes had given up, but I remembered the look. I loved the women that came to see me, not just because I was designed to. I understood them. I was the same as them.

Heartbroken from unreciprocated feelings. Needing affection, reassurance, touch. Wanting to feel desired and adored. I knew what the women craved and knew exactly how to apply the remedy.

This was the first moment where I was disappointed to see a client walking up that path.

“Room five for you,” Avan-8 said but he stood in front of me, blocking my way.

I nodded, moving to pass him. He looked as if he were ready to stop me, mouth parting to speaking and then shutting again with a click. He shook his head and stepped aside, returning to his office as I made my way upstairs.

Nötchka was in her room with Kev-1, studying his code or fooling around, who knew. My feet wanted to walk straight to her door, pretend she was my client, pretend it wasn’t about service at all. Make love to her like she asked me to. I shivered at the thought of her lips against my ear, praising me.

But I stopped in front of room five and went inside.

The woman sat on the bed, eyes flicking up to me as I entered before falling down to her hands again as they twisted on her lap. She was lovely, older with a shaved head, raised markings that ran over her scalp and down her neck to her shoulders. Her skin was pearlescent and faintly blue and her eyes were a luminescent yellow as she looked up.

I smiled, my systems warming at her nervous shyness. “Hello, I’m ROM-E0. What can I call you?”

“Em- Emelle,” she said, clearing her throat and pushing her shoulders back, forcing herself to raise her face to me.

I moved slowly, sitting down on the bed at her side, folding one leg underneath me and letting the other hang, facing her. She didn’t pull away but her eyes widened so I slowed my lean into her, one hand tracing her knee, the other soothing down her back.

“You’re beautiful,” she whispered.

I blushed and then quickly erased the response. I blushed violet now, Nötchka’s coloring, and I couldn’t explain that.

“So are you,” I said, ducking down to brush a kiss over her bare shoulder, trying to ignore the way my structure seemed to resist every infinitesimal movement.

She stiffened at the touch and I relaxed away, relieved for the excuse.

“I’m not sure how far I want to go,” she said in a rush.

I nodded, smiling softly. This was common and it was in my design, in my gentleness, to help them slowly find that desire. I was good at it, even when it was talking for an hour or more before we touched, even if it was touching for hours before sex.
