While smoking traditional cigarettes has decreased dramatically among adolescents in recent years, the percentage of high schoolers who now vape using e-cigarettes nearly doubled in 2018. A typical e-cigarette dose, called a pod, contains as much nicotine as a pack of 20 regular cigarettes. In response, US Surgeon General Jerome Adams recently issued a strong advisory against the use of e-cigarettes among teens. Adams warns that “Nicotine is uniquely harmful to young and developing brains,” and vaping “can cause learning, attention, and memory problems and can prime the brain for addiction in the future.” Tobacco vapers may also be exposed to flavorants such as diacetyl (a chemical linked to serious lung disease) and heavy metals such as nickel, tin, and lead. The surgeon general concludes, “We must take aggressive steps to protect our children from these highly potent products.
