The Cat as a Power Animal
The cat is an animal that symbolizes many positive attributes. Among these are: balance, confidence, courage, independence, recuperative power, second sight, swiftness, and wisdom. The cat has also been associated with the practice of magick since times most olden. As a totem (or power animal) the cat represents a spirit guide who possesses great strength and is both resourceful and brave.
Individuals whose totem animal is the cat are often independent in their lifestyles, and greatly influenced by the creative energies that are conjured when the dark shadows of night and silver moonlight rays dance together.
When a totem cat makes its presence known to you, you may find yourself experiencing an increase in your spiritual energy, physical and mental agility, vision, hunting skills, and self-confidence. If there are certain individuals in your life who have been using intimidation to manipulate you, your feline spirit helper will stand by your side and teach you how to keep yourself from being further victimized in such a manner.
Often a totem cat will come into your life at a time when you are experiencing, or about to experience, a great imbalance of energies. As your guide, it may reveal to you the cause of the imbalance, as well as the steps you must take in order for balance to be restored.
When you embark on a spirit journey with a cat totem, you should always expect the unexpected. The unknown is waiting to be explored, and this applies not only to the physical world around you, but to outer worlds and inner worlds as well. One must take care, however, not to be tempted by, or become addicted in any way to the darker side of the occult. Not only can it be potentially dangerous, it can lead you astray from your spiritual path to enlightenment.
Many contemporary pagans and Wiccans, who either practice shamanism or incorporate elements of it into their ritual-work, feel connected with the cat as a totem animal on a meditative, magickal, or spiritual level. The cat, with its age-old association with witchcraft and its abundance of mystical charm, seems a natural totem animal for witches and all folks who live a magickal lifestyle.
This is not to say that a witch or other individual whose totem animal is the cat cannot have other animal totems in addition. As a matter of fact, most people do have more than one totem. Just as two teachers teach their students important lessons in different subjects and different ways, so do totems. For instance, a bear totem may indicate strength, a dog totem may indicate loyalty, a bird totem may indicate freedom or the need for grounding, and so forth.
It is interesting to note that many American Indian tribes, including the Pueblo, have associated the cat with witches since the animal was first brought to the new world by the European settlers. Undoubtedly, the cat’s eerie glowing eyes, spark-emitting fur, and nocturnal prowling habits helped to link it to the world of the witch’s craft, as well as to the Devil and the dark, mysterious forces of the occult.
