The Relative Importance Game

In the relative importance game, choosing turns the options—in this case your values—into winners and losers. So when you choose one value over another, your mind is likely to follow with “Why didn’t you choose that other value instead, isn’t it important too? Do you really care about it? It doesn’t seem like it!”

Your mind is actually helping you here, though it may not feel that way in the moment. It asks you to stop and consider whether a particular choice is as important as another. This is a good thing—much better than making choices on autopilot or based on whatever or whoever is screaming loudest at any given time. So play along. Stop and think about your choices and question yourself.

After thinking about it, you might answer your mind by saying, “Sure, mind, that other value is important. In fact, all of my values are important.” Some of your values get short shrift in some situations, and some may be pushed aside repeatedly. Still, you can acknowledge that all of your values are important. The choice to go one way or another doesn’t diminish any of your values. You simply have to prioritize. You can always come back to a value that seems to be getting the short end of the stick and spend time nurturing it. That’s up to you.
