Embryonic Midline
Ida Rolfâs writings emphasized that the human bodyâs central axis is a consequence of gravitation. Among her students, however, she acknowledged that other energies were at play. âRolfers,â she said, â. . .so organize the body that the gravity field can reinforce the bodyâs energy field.â 36
The vertical line has been a symbol of human aspiration for millennia. Itâs portrayed as the tree of life, as Jacobâs ladder, as the Christian cross, as the movement of powerful Kundalini energy in the Indian spiritual tradition. A possible explanation for the potency of the central line as a symbol is found in the field of embryology.
A longitudinal seam, called the primitive streak , appears in embryonic tissue a mere fifteen days after conception. This transient streak grows upward through a disc-like formation of fascial tissue, establishing a top and bottom, left and right. Thus, we are spatially oriented long before we are fully formed. The streak is the precursor of the spinal cord and spine. For the next five weeks, the developing tissue expands, folds, twists in upon itself, opens out again, and refolds like origami, forming new layers, chambers, and protrusions. At the end of eight weeks, the folding tissue has become an embryo. Such creation is no stacking of parts, no assembling of levers. It is a dance of tensegral expansion. 37
Some osteopathic physicians believe that the embryonic midline kindles our aliveness throughout our days, influencing the health of body, mind, and spirit. Awareness of the polarity between bregma and your perineal point is a physical metaphor for this generative midline.
