Lack of feelings may also be experienced when a person dies after suffering from a drawn-out illness, and those around have had time to come to terms with the sadness long before their hearts stopped beating.

In these cases you can go through the death in your mind, rehearse it, and experience some of the bereavement feelings before they actually happen. This is called ‘anticipatory grieving’. Psychiatrist Professor Brice Pitt found that the worst effects of bereavement are avoidable by this type of grieving.

It has been found that the women who grieve in advance for the womb or breast they have to lose cope much better afterwards than those who close their minds to the impending loss until it has actually happened. The same technique can be applied where the death of a loved one, say from cancer or motor neurone disease, is predictable.
