AN HOUR LATER DAMAIN had finished with Sarah’s hair and makeup. He cut it to the collarbone and added the waves. As for her makeup, he kept it simple with pink lipstick and white and silver eyeshadow.

Next, it was on to the clothing. Lisa and Mallory picked out several outfits, and ushered Sarah to a back room to try them on. Cynthia waited out in the lobby with Damian as Sarah came out modeling the dresses. So far they vetoed a red halter dress, and a yellow long sleeve.

The door closed and Sarah came out wearing a light blue, short-sleeved maxi dress. The outfit fit with Sarah’s new hairstyle, and her makeup. When Sarah looked into the mirror after trying on the dress, she thought she was going to cry, this time happy tears. She’d always been doing stuff for others and to have someone give her this special gift tugged at her heart.

“What do you think?”

“You look beautiful.” Cynthia thought she was going to get emotional as she noticed the smile on Sarah’s face.

“I feel beautiful.” Sarah twirled around in her dress. “Thank you, Cynthia. And everyone thank you for the makeover.”

“To complete the look, we have one other thing.” Lisa took a box from Mallory and presented Sarah with a pair of silver, glittery stilettos.

Sarah put on the heels, then twirled once more in front of the mirror.

“All eyes are going to be on you.” Damian piped up.

Cynthia glanced at the clock on the wall. “Speaking of, we have to go if we want to make the party.”

Cynthia and Sarah thanked everyone for their help, and Cynthia paid them for their services. Then the two women stepped outside to wait for their Uber.

Chapter Four

The book launch was in full swing as guests began to arrive. Kyle and Eleanor watched as everyone helped themselves to hors d'oeuvres and marveled at the decor.

“I think the party’s going to be a success.” Eleanor sipped on champagne.

“It will once the guest of honor takes the stage.” Kyle had arranged for the author to read a few excerpts, then answer questions about her book.

“There’s a lot of lovely women here.”

Kyle arched an eyebrow in his mother’s direction.

“All I’m saying is it wouldn’t hurt if you mingled a bit.” Eleanor then excused herself when she heard her name being called.
