The coach thought a minute. “Huh. You might be right.”

“I am right,” he insisted. Pleasepleasepleasepleaseplease! “Give me a shot at trying out, coach!”

Coach Karloff scratched his nose thoughtfully. “The season’s already started. I can’t do that.” He paused. “But then, I’ve never had a dead kid to work with.”

He checked his watch. “Listen, I’m willing to give you a shot, but practice starts in an hour. You probably don’t have time to make it, with your route and all.”

“No! I so totally can!” Freekin couldn’t stop nodding. “I’ll be there.”

“Okay, then.” The coach scratched his nose again. “See you on the field in an hour.”

“Thanks, coach. I’ll be there early. I’ll be there in twenty minutes.”

“An hour’s fine, Ripp,” the coach said, with a wry grin. “I won’t be there till six myself.”

“Okay. Thank you. Thank you!”

“It’s just a tryout,” the coach reminded him. Then he climbed back into his truck and drove away.

“Yes!” Freekin cried, leaping into the air. Scary zoomed around Freekin’s head, chattering excitedly.

“Zibugazeeba! Galilikili!”

This was perfect! This was huge! He wanted to run down the street, find Lilly, and tell her. But that would not be cool. And Freekin Ripp was all about cool. At least from this point going forward, anyway.

“Yay!” he shrieked, and did a happy dance.

Pretty looked up from polishing the statue.

“What up, Freekin?” she called.

“Leekadeeka!” Scary cried.

“Football! Football!” Pretty shrieked. Then she stopped. “What is football?”

“I’m going to be a football player!” he said. “A real, live player! Maybe. If I make it. I have to make it. I’ll die if I don’t make it.

“I have to stop saying that.”
