CHAPTER 33

Detective Thomas had done enough to distract Tryst after the interview, but Huggens was preoccupied. He stayed behind them as the guards cuffed Jim and led him back down the corridor. Huggens saw the life quickly drain from the young man’s eyes. He was withdrawing into himself, a place of miserable darkness, no doubt. Huggens wondered if it was a defense-mechanism. He also wondered whether the accused had been truthful.

As Huggens followed his companions down the hall and around to the elevators, he noticed Thomas checking back with him. Making sure he was keeping pace. Huggens did his best to seem disinterested with the proceedings. Tryst was actually arguing with Thomas about the validity of the man’s story, but it was an argument he was losing. As Thomas stated, it was just a made-up story. The likelihood of some outside person coming to visit Jim in the middle of the night to gloat was simply ridiculous. Untrue. For all they knew, Jim had imagined it.

It was probably just a dream.

Huggens had his doubts though. He didn’t like this Detective Thomas very much. She was too comfortable in making assumptions that suited her. Huggens believed that regardless of Jim’s seeming guilt, the case against him wasn’t as solid as Thomas would like to make out.

And maybe that would be enough.

To continue forth.

“Well, that will be enough for now, Detective Thomas,” Tryst said once they were in the lobby again. “We’ll make some further inquires, and then decide if there’s enough to work with.”

“It’s a lost cause, but you do as you like,” Thomas said, flicking her hair back. “Let me know if I can be of any more assistance to you.”

“Thank you, we appreciate that.”

Tryst and Thomas shook hands.

“Thanks for your time,” Huggens said, causing Thomas to jump, as though she’d momentarily forgotten he was there.

“Yes,” she said shortly and walked away.

Tryst and Huggens moved towards the entrance.

“So what do you make of all that then?” Tryst asked quietly. “That was kind of a ridiculous story that guy told.”

“Not so ridiculous, actually,” Huggens said. “He may have imagined the last part with the man visiting him in the cell, but the rest could well have been true. Though it might have nothing to do with his case.”

“Which way is the wind blowing then, do you think?” Tryst asked. “Do you think Officer Jim is guilty? Did he murder that girl?”

“I’m not sure,” Huggens said. “But I think I know a way we can find out.”
