On the way back to his home in Punjabi Bagh, Jatin looked in on Anjali as he had done each evening since the attack. The hospital noise was muted in her room and the curtains drawn half-way against the distant street light. It felt strange, being in the same room as her and not smelling her perfume.

He never ventured close to her bed, letting her face remain a dark shadow on her pillows. He would have to talk to her soon, but he wanted to avoid it for as long as he could, at least until he had some answers about her attacker. And if it turned out to be Nikhil…Nikhil had attacked Varun the day before. With Anjali’s permission, he was still at Bhalla’s clinic, where he couldn’t cause harm.

Stepping out of Anjali’s room to head home, Jatin considered his friend’s words. Grewal was happy where he was, but not Jatin. Not with all the stress the job brought him, not with his empty shell of a marriage, not even with his affair with Anjali. Keeping their relationship a secret had worked all this while, but not now when Anjali suffered in the hospital and he was reduced to the status of a hapless onlooker. He wanted to be with her, hold her hand, stand beside her, take care of her when she got released from the hospital.

Maya already resented it. Funny, how he felt the need to be with Anjali now that she was disfigured; he’d always thought his attraction to her was more physical than anything else. Friendship perhaps. But this went beyond that. Very different from what he felt about Maya or Varun, this gnawing at his insides at Anjali’s suffering, the need to take it away. He must have felt this way about her for a while but paid it no mind. So much easier not to feel, because as he’d found out in the last few days, it fucking hurt.

Lost in his thoughts, he didn’t switch on the living room lights. He took off his shoes and was about to head up the stairs to his room, when the lights came on. Drishti.

‘You haven’t gone to bed?’

Drishti had the use of the master bedroom—he usually stepped in for his clothes but spent the night in the guest room. Drishti slept early because she left for work at seven each morning.

‘Where were you? I called your phone.’

This was unusual. They did not keep tabs on each other, coming and going as they pleased. Perhaps the incident with Nikhil had scared her.

‘I went to the hospital,’ Jatin said. ‘It was too late to meet the doctor. He had already left.’

‘You’re breaking up our family for her? After I stayed for years, tolerated you, and you are…’

‘What is this about?’

‘Maya told me everything. I couldn’t talk to you yesterday because Varun was home.’

Varun was staying with his grandparents tonight—they lived less than a five-minute drive away.

Jatin hadn’t expected Maya to talk to Drishti. He was old enough to be Maya’s father, and there was always that sense of discretion between them.
