everything in flow.

Compassion

She took her time

turning her fork in the flesh

of the big winter fish, tearing

at its face—

coruscant gray,

eye turned up—

like a small moon

on a celadon plate.

At the elegant country ryokan

tucked into Kyoto’s northern hills,

she ate the fish slowly

afraid of bones.

And then she caught the glint

of a fishhook

bent tightly into its cheek,

and she vanished

into the river,

feeling the cold rush

swim against her skin,

the bump of rock and glide of current

the freedom of floating,

the way all good journeys begin.
