Chapter Twenty
As quickly as the storm had rolled in, the wind dropped, the rain stopped, and the sun was back out and shining through the clouds. Spring in England. Michelle thought that it pretty much summed up Camâs life lately.
Cam was wasting no time ensuring her mother really did come back with them, for however long she wanted to stay. Cam would take whatever was on offer for now. She hoped her mother would stay long enough, but if she wanted to return then Cam would make sure she was okay. She could stay here if she wanted to, in the apartment.
âDo you need me to come and help you pack, Mum?â Cam asked, sitting down on the arm of the couch.
Kate had already left an hour earlier as she had a job to go to and couldnât take any time off, even though she wanted to. It had been great to spend as much time together as they had, and they had said goodbye with hugs and a few tears and of course the promise to visit soon. Both of them were grateful for the second chance.
âNo Camryn, but I will call you when I am done, and you can come and pick me up if thatâs okay?â her mum said as she rifled through her handbag for keys.
âYeah sure. I just worry.â She was chewing her lip again, filled with a nervous apprehension.
âHe wonât be any trouble, Camryn. He might be a stubborn, close-minded old misery guts, but he has never laid a hand on me, and if he starts today then he will come off worse, I can assure you,â she said, reaching back into her bag and pulling out a small canister of pepper spray.
âWhere the heck did you get that?â Cam laughed.
âApparently your sister was worried too, this arrived by courier a few days ago.â
Cam continued to laugh. Things really had changed while she had been away.
âOkay, so you will call me when youâre ready then?â
âYes, now stop worrying and go and enjoy the rest of the day with your wife.â Pippa kissed her daughter on the cheek and gently squeezed her arm. âIâll be fine, Camryn.â
âAlright, look Mum, this is my number now.â She held out a card and Pippa took it. She looked at it and entered Camâs new number into phone, and then she called Camâs phone.
Cam read the display, the smile on her face widening as she added to contacts and typed in âMum.â
~Yes~
They pulled up outside the house that Cam had called home for her entire childhood. It wasnât much, just a semi-detached with adjoining garage and a tiny front yard. She looked up at the top window, her old bedroom, and for a moment she felt a pang of regret, mixed with belonging. There had been a lot of laughter and love inside those walls once.
âYou can come in if you like,â Pippa said from her seat in the back of the car.
âMaybe another time, eh Mum?â she said, glancing up at her mother through the rear-view mirror.
