As quickly as it had taken over, Jak was left in control of his wayward right hand again. Trembling, he drew his fingers out of the gory ruin and stared in horror at the possessed red limb. Stumbling to the clear pond he dropped to his knees and submerged the dripping hand in the water, furiously wiping it clean of brains before the revulsion of what he’d just done took hold of him. Jak heaved his breakfast into the water until his stomach ached on the emptiness. Miserable, shaking in disgust, he watched the tiny, translucent glowing fish dart forward to pick at the sudden bounty.

“Fuck you fish,” he rasped. Climbed to his feet.

Where now? his hand immediately stabbed with pain as Morgo protested.

“Follow me,” the goblin sorceress said and pointed to the right. Jak hesitated a moment before he followed the directions.

She led him to the back of the cave and finding a hidden latch a section of the wall swung back, leading them to a concealed passage.

As he stepped over the sorcerer’s corpse he paused, seeing something colorful on the man-thing’s belt. Avoiding looking at the deformed skull, Jak pulled the item from the belt. It was a copper talisman. From the surface. And brand new. He didn’t have time for this. But instinct made him peer through the second sight and read the thing’s arcane aura. It was magical, and only minorly so, but the aura it possessed was familiar. But from where?

Quickly digging in his pocket he produced the rune-inscribed journal of Wend’s father. That magical book had two separate aura signatures on it; one was Effik’s but Wend’s notes, spells and aura was on it too.

There. The same. The residual magical trace had the same signature. The amulet was Wend’s. She was here. Somewhere.

He fought himself for a moment. Almost turning back to go look for her. He was so close, and he could almost taste the end of this horrific job. But more than that, she’d been down in this living nightmare for three days; he’d only faced it for a few hours and it was scarring the edges of his soul. He couldn’t stand the thought of the girl being here a moment longer.

No… she was a wizard, and wizard’s cheat. Wend would make it, somehow. She’d last until he could come back. He had to do the same.

Yer the stupidest wizard I know, Morgo said.

“Yeah yeah,” he told the imp possessing his hand. “I’m paying attention.”

Oh yeah? What do you think this fucktoy meant when she said there was something inside you? Sure as shit wasn’t talking about me. I’m not that powerful… useful, yes, but in the demonic hierarchy nobody is going to notice me.

“Nyarlathotep,” he whispered. “Obviously.”

Figuring out everything the sorceress had said would have to wait for some other day. Right now, he had to get out of these caves. He sincerely hoped so. She’d been vague: did he die here? Was this a castle of bones?

“This way,” the girl said.
