Chapter Seventeen

When she got to the hospital, she changed out of her hoody and sweat pants and into a professional set of clothes for work. She removed the braid and combed her hair out, fastening it into a ponytail with a decorative clip, and tossed on her white lab coat. In only a moment, she had changed from one disguise to another in the hospital, just in case one of Rez’s minions had followed her.

In the short time between leaving Doug at breakfast and when getting to the hospital, her mood had plummeted. June had never been as disinterested in rounds as she was that day, and went through them at a gallop with Lane, her only desire being to get back out of the hospital. Not only was her mood deserting her, but also her abdominal pains and spasms were beginning to kick in again, and with each sip of tea, nausea reared its ugly head. Antacid no longer calmed her stomach and aspirin barely made a dent in her constant headache. She knew much of it could be attributed to stress, and she just didn’t have the energy to work out, her usual way of handling tension. No sooner did she get rid of her resident than June made a call.

“Ralph, do you have time today?”

“On a Sunday? June, are you trying to use all of your pre-paid therapy sessions in one month?”

She sighed. “Do you have time or not?”

After they worked out a time for later in the afternoon, she dialed another number.

“Becky, are you busy today?”

“I have time right now, June. Why?”

“I need a tour guide of the Valley.”

“Like, you’re interested in television studios all of a sudden?” Becky asked. Her voice instantly slipped into the valley girl accent that normally made June cringe.

“It’s hard to explain. I have this little map. You know what? I’ll be at your house in a few,” she said hurriedly before she ended the call.

June didn’t even go into the house to say hello, but waited at the curb, tooting her horn a couple of times. Mismatched in clothes, June was still dressed in the dark slacks and tropical blouse she wore during rounds, something suitable for weekend rounds or a day in the office but little else. Becky, however, was wearing cut-off jeans and a tank top, better suited for a backyard barbecue.

She handed over her hand-drawn map that she copied from the napkin and explained the little notes after Becky settled into the passenger’s seat.

“I need to find a house,” June said. “One specific house, but I don’t know the address or street name. Can you figure anything out from what I have on there?”

Becky turned the half sheets of paper one way and then the other, flipping it over to see if there was more. “This could be a lot of places. What’s this about anyway? Were you looking at real estate out there and lost the address?”

“I saw a decent place but it was dark and I don’t remember the exact way to get there.
