Chapter 8

XIVEN

My father's surprise visit to me has caused me to take a moment to consider how everything has affected Bliss. I suppose I didn't realize how sensitive Terrans are about spending time alone. I can understand, considering that if I were on Earth and Bliss left me for weeks like I've done to her, I’d probably feel helpless and hopeless and want to go home. It saddens me to know that she thinks I don't want to be with her anymore. When my father came and told me this, I was shocked to hear that he wants us together.

"Son, she is your mate. Even in the midst of this terrible thing with the space elevator, perhaps you should include your future mate in on your work. Find something for her to do. Find a way to spend time with her. She doesn’t need to be left alone on A’Marta with thoughts about how she'd rather be on Earth."

I take the shuttle bus back to A’Marta and go at once to my future mate who is cleaning my home. A surprised look passes across her face and she stands up straight. I expect her to run into my arms, but she doesn't. Instead, she simply lowers the cleaning cloth and just stares at me.

"Bliss, are you not happy to see me? I am so happy to see you," I tell her as I smile.

"Well, you have come back to A’Marta often, and you could have seen me on any one of those trips. But I suppose your work takes precedence over me, so don't let me stop you from doing what you need to do to fix the space elevator," she says before pivoting. I walk over to her, taking her arm and pulling her close to me. She looks up into my eyes, her breathing labored and her heart pounding inside her chest. Pressing Bliss to me, my body melts into her curves, wishing that I could be at one with her. My hands wrap tightly around her back and I hold her close.

"Oh Bliss, I've missed you so. I'm so sorry that you got caught up in the snare of the broken space elevator. I'm here to take you back to Tropik with me. I want you to be with me every single day. I can't stand being away from you any longer.”

She looks up into my eyes and sighs. "Your father told you, didn’t he? You didn’t come to this decision on your own, Xiven.”

I squeeze my eyes closed and keep from showing too much emotion. Bliss needs to see me transparently. "My work ethic dictated how I conducted myself for the past few weeks. I'm so sorry that I was blinded by it, but I realize I don't want to lose you. Even if I have to strap you to my side I will do so. My sweet, if you want me to leave right now in the middle of this project to take you back to Earth, I will.
