Later that night, I got a chance to put Octavia’s theory to the test when I was summoned to Tammy’s private quarters.

I found the spiritual leader of the coalition sitting at her dresser. She was brushing her long, dark hair, paying careful attention to each strand in the process. Her eyes didn’t look as dark as they had earlier. I suspected she’d finally gotten some sleep now that she was safe with my fleet.

“Good evening, Gee,” she said, glancing at me through the mirror.

I kept at attention for the sake of propriety until Tammy gestured for me to sit down on the edge of her bed. For any other Eden, just being here would be considered a terrible sacrilege, but Tammy’s presence was oddly comforting.

“Thank you for coming so quickly,” she said as she turned to face me. “I hope you don’t mind the fact that I summoned you so late at night.”

“I live only to serve,” I replied.

“You don’t have to keep up the Eden act here in private,” said Tammy. “I’m not Eden anymore.”

“I’ll be tending to that matter shortly,” I said, which seemed to make her unhappy for a brief moment, until I used her real name.

“I wish I had your confidence, Gee. I know that you have so many centuries of experience. All those fights have hardened you into the All-Mother’s deadliest weapon. But I find myself doubting our chances. We can’t take on the entire galaxy at once and still win.”

“Maybe not,” I replied. “But we’ve had worse odds before. The vula wars tested Eden’s mettle for several generations before we finally won. Things looked just as bleak back then.”

Tammy grinned. “That was ten thousand years ago. And you still remember it?”

“Only what I had written down,” I said. “I don’t keep memories every time I reset. That’s where written information comes in handy. All I know is that from what I wrote, our chances seemed just as bleak.”

“Were you a Son of Eden back then too?”

“In a few of those cycles. In others, I had different roles. In every cycle, I had a purpose though. I was whatever Eden needed me to be, just like now.”

Tammy nodded and stood up from her table. She approached the bed and sat down beside me. I didn’t expect what she did next.

Before I could react, she pressed her lips against mine. I’d often dreamed about the glory of Eden’s embrace before, but never like this. Tammy’s lips danced across mine. It was a chaste kiss but it was also one that held a lot of promise.

When she looked away, her eyes had a dreamy quality to them.

“Just like I expected,” she whispered.

“I guess I don’t need to ask if it was good for you,” I said, which made her laugh.

“Have you always been this confident?”

“It’s hard not to be when you’re me.”

“No, I can see why,” said Tammy. “I can’t tell you how incredibly attracted I am to you. And it’s hard for me to explain why.
