CHAPTER 14

Katie normally looked forward to her Saturdays, if only for the respite from the school bullies. This one however was different. This one she dreaded.

“That’s my girl,” said her dad, as she entered the kitchen dressed in the exercise clothes he’d bought for her earlier that week, as a surprise.

Katie’s mum cringed as she caught sight of her daughter’s T-shirt, quickly deciding that it would be for the best if she didn’t comment. Instead she forced a smile and said, “What would you like for breakfast my, Luv?”

Before she had a chance to answer her mum, Katie’s dad said, “She’ll have the ‘power-shake’ I made for her on the side over there.”

Katie’s eyes followed the direction of her dad’s outstretched finger until her gaze fell upon a glass full of a brown, unappetising liquid. She quickly looked towards her mum for help.

Immediately understanding the look on her daughters face, Katie’s mum asked for the list of ingredients he’d used to make the power-shake adding, “Just in case there’s something in there that she hasn’t tried before and might be allergic to.”

He looked at his daughter and then back to his wife, before saying, “I think we can quite safely assume that there isn’t much our, Hungry Caterpillar hasn’t tried already; don’t you agree, Luv? And anyway,” he whispered into his wife’s ear, “would we even notice any swelling caused through an allergic reaction? I mean look at her,” he said. “I wouldn’t be surprised if she’s also got a bit of Water Retention Disorder.”

Katie’s mum clenched her fists together as she snapped, “Have you been back on that wretched Internet again?”

He smirked at his wife’s fear of technology saying, “Look, Pumpkin Face, you’ll be thanking me when I’ve found out what’s causing all of this.”

Katie’s dad took hold of the glass and holding it up to the light, he said, “This drink is packed full of goodness. It will give you the boost you need when you’re running this morning.”

“Running!” spluttered Katie. “I don’t think I’ll be able to run yet, Dad.”

“Now, now, Katie,” he said calmly. “Don’t be quitting before you’ve even started. After all, if a baby elephant can run the first day it’s born, then so can you.”

Katie momentarily pictured the baby elephant her dad was referring to, or more likely comparing her with. They had watched it being born on the Discovery channel back in the day when Katie was slim and popular. A flashback hit her like a bolt of lightening as she recalled the nasty comment she’d made whilst she and her dad had sat together watching the programme. “Here, Dad,” she’d said, referring to the newborn elephant. “That elephant looks like the new girl in our class. Her name’s Brenda, but we call her Brenda Rear-Ender, because she’s so fat.”

Katie remembered how her dad had momentarily turned his attention away from the telly and on to her saying, “Tell me her nose isn’t that big, too?”

How they had laughed at their own spitefulness.
